Dataw Island Yacht Club
The DIYC is starting the year very busy. We held our first 2 events, Final Fridays, in January and February at the Community Center with over 100 members present both times. Our new member reception for “meet the board” will have been held by the time you read this.
Thank you to all the DIYC/DIOA members that turned out for the 2 marina work days. I think we all can agree the marina looks 100% better than it did in January. The entrance road is now actually a road and not a jungle path. The cleanup yielded fantastic results. Looks more work to go.
Kayaking is already busy. Nancy Schulte, our kayak chair, is doing a great job organizing a wide variety of trips. This trips fill quickly so when you see one announced, don’t delay and signup.
Our Fishing Co-Captains, Steve Zerbinopoulos and Rich Dutcher, have organized 4 fishing trips for the year plus a fishing seminar at the Community Center. The first fishing trip, an off-shore experience, has 15 members signed up already. 2 in-shore trips are planned, as is a fishing tournament.
Cruise planning is well underway under our new Cruise Captain, Dan Duncan. The first trip of the year will be to dine at “Q on Bay.” That will be followed shortly by a raft-up for the Beaufort Airshow in April featuring the Blue Angels. This airshow is held every other year.
The sailing program, ably lead by veteran sailor Roy Crocker, kicks off with participation in the Santa Elena Regatta in March. Roy awaits the return of docks at the Dataw Island Marina, as all members do, so that we can restart our local sailing activities and regattas.
Planning for social activities continues under the leadership of Karen McCue, Cheryl Johnson and Martha Keet. The pig pickin’, pool party and Commodore’s Ball are always member favorites.
More a complete list of all of our on and off-water activities, visit our website (datawyachtclub.com) and check out the on-line calendar.
Whether you are a boater, sailor, kayaker or a landlubber that wants to be a part of a fun and active organization, join us. DIYC members always have first call on attending our on-water events.
In my last article, I pondered in writing what the outcome would be on the DIOA vote to purchase the marina property. The result is in and thank you to all DIOA members!!!!
