Dataw Island Yacht Club
The DIYC has starting the year with two great events. We had our January and February Final Friday events at the Community Center with capacity crowds of nearly 120 members present both times. We had our Souper Bowl gathering in January. Thanks to our Bridge for supplying all the soups and our Board for pulling all the rest together. In February, we had our first ever Chile Cook-off. 11 of our members made their special recipes. They were all phenomenal, so thankfully we had our local professionals, Chef Matt Felix and GM Ted Bartlett on hand to judge then all and pick their favorites. Thanks to our members for making all these chilies and our winners:
1st Place– Wayne Blessing and Kim Hicks
2nd Place– Joe and Carol Cieslak
3rd Place– Ann Holden
Honorable Mention – Chris Dedel and Cathy McGill
On the boating front, our marina is now fully functional with wet slips open and filling up, fuel available on the docks, more boats coming into the dry stack in anticipation of the boating season, the Outpost store open and by the time you read this, the new Morgan River Grill should be running at full speed. It is great to see the boats in the water and all the activity particularly on some of our warmer winter days. Thanks to a number of our members and others in the community who have contributed a lot of sweat on a number of various improvement projects at the marina.
The sailing program, ably lead by veteran sailor Roy Crocker, kicked off the season with the first Dataw sailboat race in three years. It was great to see the boats starting and finishing right at our own marina. We are all excited to have monthly races back and are looking at regularly having 5 – 8 boats racing.
Kayaking is already busy. Nancy Schulte, our Kayak Captain, has our first event scheduled for March 15 in Jenkins Creek, which is a joint trip with Callawassie. There is another trip scheduled the end of the month to Callawssie Island and a great variety of trips with one pretty much every month scheduled for the rest of the year. This trips fill quickly so when you see one announced, don’t delay and signup.
Our Fishing Co-Captains, Steve Zerbinopoulos and Rich Dutcher, have organized 4 fishing trips for the year. The first fishing trip in April, an off-shore experience, already has a waiting list.
Our 2020 cruise schedule has been compiled by Cruise Captain, John Keet. The first trip of the year will be cruise to and dine at “Q on Bay” the end of March. That will be a number of great cruises this year with our signature overnight cruise to Charleston in June. Take advantage of our spectacular Low Country water ways and come out on some cruises.
Planning for social activities continues under the leadership of Cheryl Johnson and Martha Keet. Our next event is our new member social in April. Other great social events will continue through the year, including the pig pickin’, pool party and Commodore’s Ball which are always member favorites.
For a complete list of all of our on and off-water activities, visit our website (datawyachtclub.com) and check out the on-line calendar. Our events should also be on the master Dataw Island calendar.
Whether you are a boater, sailor, kayaker or a landlubber that wants to be a part of a fun and active organization, join us. DIYC members always have first call on attending all our events.
