Commodore’s Blog June 2019

First Sunset on the Deck event June 17th.

The June cruise to Daufuskie Island was a great success. The cruise to an island not many of us go to, combined with smooth water, sightings of sea turtles and dolphins, was enjoyed by all that went. Thanks to Capt. Dan Duncan for leading this outing which included lunch at the Daufuskie Marina and golf cart tours for those that wanted to do that. The Charleston cruise is next on tap.

We had to cancel a couple of kayak trips, but Nancy kept at it and our members were finally able to make the journey out to the sandbar off of Hunting and Fripp Islands. The kayak loaner list is on-line now, so if you would like to borrow a kayak, check out the website for more information. (found in the Members Sign On section)

The first inshore fishing trip was held with great participation. Nice work by Rich and Steve.

An outline of the sailing program is on the website also. Roy put this program together before he departed for the summer. It provides an overview of the plans for sailing races out of Dataw Island’s Marina once the shore dock is in place and sailboats are back at the marina. (Look under Events on the website)

The website contains a lot of information now. Board meeting minutes, loaner list, bylaws and more importantly, a complete schedule of all DIYC events planned for the year.

We held our first informal happy hour on the deck of Dataw Marina this past Monday evening. It was a byob and byof event and out of the approx. 65 attendees, no one, I believe, went home hungry. There was lots of sharing of food. Signal flags adorned the halyards on the flag pole. We had charts and old DIYC yearbooks going back to 1997. Ted Bartlett, GM of the DIOA updated the crowd on marina activities. 2 outside firms are interested in Sweetgrass and the DIC is looking at an operation there as well to support the DIOA. Ted introduced Whitney, the new admin/associate who was recently hired into the marina staff. Curtis, our harbormaster, was present as well. The evening ended with a beautiful sunset!!!

Check your e-mails for information and timing on our next happy hour at the marina.

From a DIYC Board perspective, planning for our participation in Camp Dataw in July, Pledge the Pink in October and Luminary Night in December continues. There will be volunteers needed for each event, so please stay tuned.

If you have pictures of a DIYC event, particularly the first Happy Hour at the Marina, please send them to Louise Moses ( Louise will get them posted to our website for all to enjoy.

Smooth sailing and safe boating and kayaking to all.
